The kind of healing anyone can do.

At the New York Times, "How to Heal a Traumatized Dog: Read It a Story."

This article was interesting to me because I'm not sure that this kind of thing can HEAL a dog, but I suppose that part of the healing process (especially as regards something like psychological trauma) is simply getting accustomed to the idea that a person is not necessarily going to harm you or even try to approach you. The process described here actually reminds me of one of the techniques we sometimes use when entering exam rooms with fearful dogs- sit in a corner of the room away from them and talk to their owner quietly without looking at them, just to give them a chance to get used to you.
