At NorthJersey.com, "Pet Q&A: Serious trauma? Seek a veterinarian."
Dogs (and cats) are extraordinarily good at concealing their illness or discomfort. I have a friend whose dog suffered a diaphragmatic hernia and showed basically no symptoms until she had nearly died. A diaphragmatic hernia is a condition that occurs when there is an opening in the part of the body that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and some of the contents of the abdomen are in the chest- it's a really, really serious injury. Animals are tough, and we often need diagnostics to tell us what our patients won't.
