Older pets (like older people!) should have special care.

There are a lot of things to like about the advice in this article- it's pretty much all consistent with what we would tell you here. Dogs and cats over the age of eight are considered senior pets, and we do recommend exams every six months, because things can change quickly in the later stages of a pet's life, and early detection of any problem, be it a small lump, some symptoms of arthritis, or drinking and peeing more than usual, is more important the older a pet gets.
