Dr. Karen Avila
Dr. Avila was born in Socorro, New Mexico and spent most of her childhood on a small family farm where her love of animals first took root. When she was 8 years old, her family moved overseas to the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific, where she had the opportunity to explore the ocean’s rich biodiversity.
Many years later, after living in several other states, she returned home to New Mexico, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of New Mexico. She then went on to attain her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University (CSU) in 2017.
While at CSU, Dr. Avila attained certification in medical acupuncture for veterinarians from CuraCore Integrative Medicine & Education Center in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Her special career interests include chronic pain management, surgery, and internal medicine. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association (NMVMA).
When Dr. Avila is not working, she enjoys hiking, bike rides, and playing ball with her Labrador and Chesapeake Retrievers at the park. Another favorite pastime involves her love of music, and she spends much of her free time singing with her guitar and piano. Last, but not least, she loves to travel and explore different regions and cultures - she can’t wait to see where the next adventure awaits!
