Dr. Melissa Smith, DVM
Dr. Melissa Smith grew up in Western Pennsylvania and received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1995. During college, she lived and studied in Amsterdam, The Netherlands for a year as part of her curriculum. After graduating, she visited friends outside of Santa Fe in 1996, fell in love with New Mexico, and made it her permanent home. Her background is in medical and social science research and she worked in the field for many years. Having always loved animals and wanting to be a veterinarian since she was young, when her dog was bitten by a snake, she was determined to learn how to treat such devastating conditions and she pursued veterinary school. She earned her DVM degree from Colorado State University.
Melissa loves all aspects of veterinary medicine, but is particularly interested in soft tissue surgery, small animal emergency medicine, dentistry, geriatric care, and acupuncture. She is a certified medical acupuncturist for both large and small animals and is a certified USDA veterinarian.
Outside of work, Melissa and her husband, Ray, spend time with their young sons, Everett and Oliver, cat and two dogs. They love gardening and having adventures in the wonderful outdoors of New Mexico.
