Katie Higgins, DVM
Katie is a self-proclaimed “Air Force brat” who has been gifted with a vast array of opportunities. She was born in a suburb of Los Angeles, CA, but quickly relocated due to her father’s work. Since then, Katie has lived many interesting places such as Guam, Germany, and Fairbanks Alaska. She has spent the majority of her life in various parts of New Mexico, including Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe.
Katie completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and a Bachelor of Arts in German at the University of New Mexico in 2013. After graduating, she joined Smith Vet as a veterinary assistant, with the intent of going on to veterinary school. She went on to complete a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, at the Ontario Veterinary College, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. While in Canada, Katie learned many wonderful things about the country, including how to play hockey, but she is very happy to be back home!
In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time at home with her two cats, Quinn and Oberon. She enjoys art in various forms, such as sewing, costume making, drawing, painting, ceramics, and paper mache sculpture. She loves cooking and baking, and experimenting with food in general! When not at home, Katie is also big into outdoor activities and leading an active lifestyle. She enjoys mountain biking, hiking, Frisbee, Yoga, and workouts in the park. She recently discovered bike-packing, which is quickly becoming a new and exciting passion of hers.
Katie is very excited to be back at Smith Veterinary Hospital, and eagerly awaits exploring her vast interests in veterinary medicine!
